India revokes Article 370, splits Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories

On 5 August 2019, the Government of India issued a presidential order abrogating Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which had granted special autonomous status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Parliament's upper house, the Rajya Sabha, passed a resolution recommending the revocation and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill on the same day; the lower house, the Lok Sabha, passed them on 6 August. The reorganisation act divided the state into two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, effective 31 October 2019. The move was accompanied by a communications blackout and security lockdown in the region.
